A Coffee Blackout

Let’s talk about the color of that coffee up there.  What color would you call it – Taupe?  Beige?  A nice creamy caramel?  Certainly not the color of coffee straight out of the pot.

Which brings me to the point of today’s post: I need your help.  I’m now resolutely on a mission to wean myself off coffee creamer, and I’d love all the help I can get.

I was able to quit dumping Splenda into my coffee, so now it’s just down to the creamer.  Creamer which is full of crap that I know I shouldn’t be consuming, let alone on a daily basis.  I’ve tried a handful of recipes out there for homemade nondairy creamer.  Yuck.  I’ve tried the new coconut milk one, too.  Meh.  I haven’t found one that tastes good that isn’t full of icky stuff.

Plus, because I don’t do dairy or soy, it makes any coffee other than at home a huge pain in the hiney.  I’ve only ever bumped into one coffee house that carries nondairy, nonsoy creamer.  One.  And you can bet that I ask every single one of them.  So, I dream of a day when I can just order my coffee black and not give second thought to whether it’s laced with dairy.  And the day when I can save all those stupid calories for real food.  And the day when I can post recipes here for no-sugar treats without feeling like I have some kind of dirty secret to hide from you all.

Pleeeeease – I need your ideas and suggestions!

Help?

  1. Did you try the almond milk instead of the coconut?

    1. Yep! Both seemed kind of watery and not very flavorful when compared to the Coffee Mate I've been using for the past couple of years :P

  3. OK, I need to try to not write a dissertation here. Since coffee is very near, and very dear to my heart I have some strong opinions about it.

I've consumed my coffee black for over 10 years now (even though I do secretly indulge in an Irish Coffee, or splash some Bailey's in on occasion), but it did take a while to wean myself off of the added creamer/sugar. If I put sugar and creamer in my coffee I would probably weigh 300 pounds considering the amount of coffee I consume.

I would recommend two things - 1) quit the creamer habit cold turkey and 2) try a coffee that's meant to be consumed black. Burnt or overroasted medium and dark roasts can be pretty unpalatable without creamer, but good varieties taste pretty awesome black.

    1. I love that idea, but - what coffees are good for drinking straight-up? We tend to buy our coffee from Trader Joe's, but I'll scope the grocery store, too, if it means finding a brand that's tasty!

    2. We used to order "hippy coffee" online from Counter Culture Coffee. It's super yum, but on the expensive side. I wonder if I can justify going back to their stuff if I'm skipping out on the creamer expense?

    3. If you add up the sweetener and creamer cost I would think it could/would more than justify a slightly more expensive coffee.

Foodie types have started doing coffee tastings and using the same adjectives they reserve for their wine tasting, so you might be able to find some info on the Web about "good tasting" coffee that's meant to be consumed black. I've been drinking the Raven's Brew - Dead Man's Reach for 6 years now. Yes it is expensive, but it's my only real food indulgence habit, so I think it's OK. I say you try some things out, see what you like, and have at it.

  4. vanilla hemp milk is rich and creamy might be worth a try and vanilla is yum. lighter roasts or blondes are probably better black. I did one black for a while but just love drowning my coffee in creaminess.

  5. Bwahaha!! I love this :) Did I ever tell you that I used to be a International Delight Caramel Macchiato junky??? BIG TIME. We are talking 2-3 cups a day...practically half coffee & half creamer. YUM-O!! But, I quit and lost 7lbs. Ewwwwww, right? All that crap caused me to carry around an extra 7lbs. Wowza. But, I can't quit cold turkey so I just use organic half & half now with some honey. And....I love your black Crocs in the above pic - I have the same ones ;)
