Make it From Scratch: Ranch Dressing Mix



Happy October!!  This is by far my favorite month, so I'm going to apologize up front if my posts over the next few weeks contain a ridiculous amount of exclamation points and a terrible amount of squealing.  That won't stop me from those annoying behaviors, but at least you've been forewarned :)

Ok, so this dressing mix.  I ran out of ranch dressing mix a couple of weeks ago, and rather than make a trip to the grocery store, I searched for a recipe I could whip up at home.  Store bought ranch mix has MSG and a few other creepy ingredients, so this fits right in with my goal to eliminate bad ingredients from our pantry.  I made this dressing two ways - regular and nondairy, so that we can accommodate everybody in one fell swoop.  If you check the photos below, you can see how both versions turned out.



As you Twitter peeps may already know - I made homemade Candy Corn yesterday, and it turned out sooo well.  I can't believe how easy it actually was!  It's a perfect recipe for kids, and I can't wait to share it with you later this week!

Ranch Dressing Mix

Dairy Version:

1/2 c. (65g) dry buttermilk powder
1 Tbsp. dried parsley
1 tsp. dried dill weed
1 tsp. onion powder
1 tsp. minced onion or dried chives
1 tsp. salt
1/2 tsp. garlic powder
1/4 tsp. ground black pepper

Whisk ingredients in a bowl and store in a sealed container.

To make dressing:  Combine 3/4 cup mayonnaise, 1/2 cup milk, and 1 heaping Tablespoon ranch dressing mix.  Whisk until thoroughly combined.  Refrigerate for a few hours to allow flavors to meld.  Makes approx 16 oz.


Nondairy Version:

1 Tbsp. dried parsley
1 tsp. dried dill weed
1 tsp. onion powder
1 tsp. minced onion or dried chives
1 tsp. salt
1/2 tsp. garlic powder
1/4 tsp. ground black pepper

To make dressing:  Combine 3/4 cup mayonnaise, 1/2 cup unsweetened nondairy milk, 1 Tablespoon ranch dressing mix, and 1 1/2 tsp. vinegar.  Whisk until thoroughly combined.  Refrigerate for a few hours to allow flavors to meld.  Makes approx 16 oz.

  1. Thanks so much for the dressing recipe, i'm trying it! My hubby loves ranch dressing and I hate buying the bottled stuff since there is so much junk in it. Homemade candy corn...my one candy weakness. I NEED that recipe.

    2. I have a question. Does the dry Ranch Dressing Mix have to be stored in the refrigerator? The dry buttermilk powder canister says to refrigerate it after opening.
