Real Estate, Business Travel, and Hypoglycemia



A bit of a jumbly mouthful, no?

But those three things are governing my world right now.  I'm slated to travel once again for my day job, and next week has me in Poughkeepsie, New York.  Which means that I'm not home to make real food :(  Boo! It's fun to see different places and to eat in restaurants on the company dime, but it makes me miss homemade food that tastes so much better (and makes my jeans fit better, too).  Anyway!  I was in Reno two weeks ago, I'll be in Poughkeepsie next week, and who knows what the Fall will bring in terms of more travel.



And, I really haven't told anyone but a handful of people that Bo and I are currently house hunting right now.  Which is incredibly exciting!  We've been in condos for years now, and I'm so happy to get back into a house with a yard.  I was raised in wide open spaces, so the idea of having trees and property between our front door and our neighbors' makes my heart skip a beat.  We've spent the past few weekends looking at houses and scouring the online listings, and it's creeping in on all of our spare time.  We're hoping to get something in the works asap (no more rent!!), but again - it's stealing time that I usually dedicate to kitchen experiments.

... Which leads to that last part of the oddball title up there:  Hypoglycemia.  I've got all the classic symptoms, but I haven't officially been diagnosed.  One doctor told me that a person can exhibit all the symptoms, but the fasting blood sugar test will reveal nothing, and that if I can fix it by altering my diet, then I'd be fine.  Another doctor looked me in the eye and said, "I mean - is hypoglycemia even a real thing?"  She was lovely (<-- boldfaced lie).  Anyway, all that to say that lately, my blood sugar has been crashing a lot more often.  Like, at least once every weekend day when my meal schedules are all over the place.  And it's something that takes hours for me to recover from.  It's pretty much zero fun, and it can't be good for my body to be reacting to a drop by pumping adrenaline and cortisol like crazy.  After more reading, and more reading, I decided to give up caffeine.  Yup, that one item most people claim they need to even get through each day.  Turns out that caffeine exaggerates the symptoms of low blood sugar.  Um, not awesome!  So, I've given up caffeine to see if my blood sugar feels more stable and less prone to crashing.  It's been nearly two weeks, and I actually do feel better.  In that span, I've only had one time that I started feeling really bad, so I'm considering it a success.  Plus, it just feels good to not "need" a caffeine fix in the mornings; freeing, even.  If I don't have time to brew a pot of coffee before I head to work, no big deal.  I don't need it to start my day.  Now, it's just a cozy treat when I have time to sit down and enjoy it.  As I am doing right now :)

  1. Lot's of traveling? No caffeine? Sorry to hear, but I'd have to totally agree with you. My massive coffee habit has the tendency to put me all over the place, and even though I SHOULD, I still won't give it up.
